snowline frozen treats
John M. Brewer started snowline while working toward his PhD in astronomy at Yale. He is now an associate professor at SFSU. His work focuses on discovering new planets around sun-like stars and characterizing the composition and properties of their hosts. To wind down, he makes ice cream.
There was a legacy of ice cream making within the astronomy department at Yale. When John arrived in 2010, fellow grad students Charles and Anne helped him move in and asked a small favor: churn a quart or two of ice cream for an upcoming party. They had noticed his ice cream maker as they carried it up the stairs. That party of 13 flavors of ice cream raised the bar and John began to experiment with his own new flavors. Anne and Charles had in turn been motivated into ice cream making by a previous Yale astronomer.
